Turkey, Greece, and Georgia have launched a joint initiative as part of the “Pure Rivers” project, which aims to reduce pollution in the rivers of the Black Sea Basin and protect ecosystem health.
As part of the European Union-funded project, the Sakarya Governor’s Office from Turkey, Democritus University of Thrace from Greece, and the Lanchkhuti Municipality from Georgia participated as project partners.
With a budget of approximately 1,522,117 euros, the project will involve comprehensive scientific studies on the Sakarya River, the Meriç (Evros) River, and the Supsa River.
To Last 30 Months
At meetings attended by academics, municipal representatives, and environmental experts from Turkey, Greece, and Georgia, the roadmap to be implemented as part of the project was discussed. The project, which is planned to last 30 months, aims to identify and regularly monitor sources of pollution in rivers using scientific methods.
Ecosystems and Biodiversity to Be Protected
As part of the project, feasible and sustainable strategies to reduce pollution will also be developed. Efforts will also be made to revitalize river ecosystems and protect biodiversity.
The data collected will be shared with local governments, partner organizations, and decision-makers.
