Turkey, Greece, and Georgia have joined forces in a joint project called “Pure Rivers” aimed at identifying and reducing pollution in the rivers of the Black Sea Basin and improving ecosystem health.
Supported by a budget contribution of approximately 1,522,117 euros from the European Union, the project will involve comprehensive scientific studies on the Sakarya River, the Meriç (Evros) River, and the Supsa River.
Academics, municipal representatives, and environmental experts from Turkey, Greece, and Georgia met to evaluate the roadmap to be followed within the scope of the project.
The 30-month project includes the Sakarya Governor’s Office from Turkey, Democritus University of Thrace from Greece, and the Lanchkhuti Municipality from Georgia as project partners.
Work will be carried out under four main headings within the framework of the project. Accordingly, sources of pollution in the target rivers will be identified using scientific methods and monitored on a regular basis.
Feasible and scalable strategies to reduce pollution will be developed and implemented. At the same time, efforts will be made to revitalize river ecosystems and protect biodiversity. The data and findings obtained will be shared with stakeholders, local governments, and decision-makers.
