Turkey, Greece, and Georgia have taken action to protect the lifelines of the Black Sea. Through the European Union-supported “Pure Rivers” project, the sources of pollution in the 824-kilometer-long Sakarya River will be scientifically identified and eliminated. This historic collaboration, with a budget of 1.5 million euros, aims to revitalize the river’s ecosystem.
The Sakarya River—Turkey’s third-longest river and considered a symbol of fertility in the Sakarya region—is being placed under a cross-border protection shield. As part of the “Pure Rivers” project, which aims to clean up water sources in the Black Sea Basin, Turkey, Greece, and Georgia have joined forces.
A Million-Euro Cleanup Campaign
This massive project, supported by the European Union with a budget of 1,522,117 euros, will not remain merely on paper. Academics and environmental experts will identify pollution hotspots one by one along the 824-kilometer stretch of the Sakarya River, which originates in Eskişehir and flows into the Black Sea at Karasu. The Sakarya River, along with the Meriç and Supsa rivers, will be placed under close monitoring.
30-Month Scientific Monitoring
The project, for which a coordination meeting was held, will last exactly 30 months. During this period, concrete environmental strategies to protect the river’s biodiversity and reduce pollution will be implemented in the field. The waste load carried by major tributaries such as the Porsuk Creek, Ankara Creek, and Çark Stream will also be monitored using scientific methods.
