The PURE RIVERS Project, launched to reduce pollution in rivers flowing into the Black Sea and improve ecosystem health, was introduced at a meeting hosted by Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa.
The launch meeting for the PURE RIVERS Project—which was launched to assess and reduce pollution and improve ecosystem health in target rivers within the Black Sea Basin—was held at Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa.
Supported under the Interreg NEXT Black Sea Basin Program and launched on February 28, 2026, the project brought together partner institutions from Turkey, Greece, and Georgia to work toward common environmental goals.

“Pollution Now Knows No Borders”
In statements made at the meeting, it was emphasized that the rivers flowing into the Black Sea are currently under serious environmental pressure. In particular, attention was drawn to the fact that pollution and habitat degradation pose significant threats not only to the environment but also to public health, the economy, and future generations.
Officials noted that environmental pollution has become a global issue that knows no borders, stating that the PURE RIVERS Project is not merely a scientific study but also an example of cross-border responsibility.
Three Countries, Three Rivers, Four Institutions
As part of the 30-month project, research will be conducted on the Sakarya River in Turkey, the Meriç (Evros) River in Greece, and the Supsa River in Georgia.
The institutions participating in the project are listed as follows:
- Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa (Project Leader – Turkey)
- Sakarya Governor’s Office (Turkey)
- Democritus University of Thrace (Greece)
- Lanchkhuti Municipality (Georgia)
Work Will Be Conducted in Four Key Areas
Under the PURE RIVERS Project, work will be carried out in four main areas:
Pollution Detection and Monitoring
Pollution sources in the target rivers will be analyzed using scientific methods and monitored on a regular basis.
Reduction Strategies
Feasible and sustainable methods for reducing pollution will be developed.
Ecosystem Restoration
Efforts will be made to revitalize river ecosystems and protect biodiversity.
Knowledge Sharing
The data collected and the methods developed will be shared with the public, local stakeholders, and decision-makers.
Aiming for Long-Term Environmental Benefits
The PURE RIVERS Project aims to improve water quality, protect river ecosystems, and strengthen green infrastructure.
The partnerships established, scientific data collected, and methods developed as part of the project are intended to guide environmental policies in the Black Sea Basin even after the project is completed.
