Turkey, Greece, and Georgia have signed a new environmental cooperation agreement aimed at protecting key water resources in the Black Sea Basin. As part of the “Pure Rivers” project, supported by the European Union, the initiative aims to reduce pollution and restore ecosystems in the region’s rivers, particularly the Sakarya River.
Supported by a budget of approximately 1,522,117 euros, the project brings together academics, local governments, and environmental experts from the three countries. A coordination meeting for the project has already been held.
As part of the project, sources of pollution in the Sakarya River, the Meriç (Evros) River, and the Supsa River will be identified using scientific methods, and regular monitoring activities will be conducted. In addition, practical environmental strategies aimed at reducing pollution will be developed and implemented in the field.
The 30-month project aims to revitalize river ecosystems, protect biodiversity, and share the scientific data obtained with the public and decision-makers. The work is also expected to contribute to regional environmental policies.
